Lesson 2 – Menthamizh Script – Modifiers

Modifiers

Sound Extender / Repeater / Stresser

Adding the modifier , called the sword after the short vowels , , ,  &  gives the long vowels , , ,  & . Unlike other modifiers, it always follows the letter that it modifies. It is also represented by placing a dot below the preceding letter which it modifies.
 +  =  or 
 +  = 

          Nasalizer

Adding the modifier , called the spear before the vowels gives a nasal twang to the vowels. It is also represented by a dot above the succeeding letter it modifies.

This modifier called the ‘bow’ will be used to change the sound of consonants in Pillai Thamizh. The alternative way of writing this modifier is to write a dash over the (succeeding) consonant that it modifies.

This modifier called the ‘shield’ will be also used to change the sound of consonants in Pillai Thamizh. The alternative way of writing this modifier is to write a dash under the (succeeding) consonant that it modifies.

Sometimes we may give a totally different sound to the consonants by using both the above modifiers for the same consonant. Thus a consonant can have upto four different sounds in Menthamizh.
